Innovia Films has introduced P2G, a clear high gas transmission BOPP film developed for flow wrap packaging applications for fresh produce, including pre-prepared vegetables.
The film has been designed to support respiration control by optimising gas transmission rates, helping maintain the freshness and quality of packaged produce throughout the supply chain. By enabling appropriate gas exchange, the material can contribute to extending shelf life and reducing food waste.
P2G is heat-sealable on both sides, allowing consistent sealing during packaging operations. The film also offers optical clarity to maintain product visibility on retail shelves. According to the company, the material retains puncture and impact resistance at low temperatures and is designed to perform in different climatic conditions during transport and storage.
“P2G represents the next generation of fresh produce packaging,” said Megan Hinkley, Senior Product Manager – Packaging at Innovia Films. “It combines functionality, reliability, and sustainability to meet the evolving needs of retailers, packers, and consumers, while supporting the industry’s transition to more circular packaging solutions.”
The film is a mono-material polypropylene structure and is designed to be recyclable within the polypropylene waste stream. The company states that this design approach supports efforts to increase the recyclability of packaging and aligns with the objectives of the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which is expected to come into force in 2025.
P2G can also incorporate chemically recycled and bio-sourced ISCC-certified polymers through a mass balance approach. This allows the use of recycled content while maintaining the required performance characteristics for fresh produce packaging.
By extending the shelf life of fresh produce, the material may also contribute to lowering the carbon footprint of food supply chains by reducing spoilage, transport losses, and the need for replacement shipments.
